Geeta Mukherjee Biography

Geeta Mukherjee was an Indian politician and social worker from West Bengal, best known for her efforts towards women empowerment. She was a four times MLA from Panskura Purba, from 1967 to 1977. She also served as Member of Parliament seven times representing Panskura constituency, from 1980 to 2000. Geeta is widely regarded as one of the prominent female Communist leaders from the state of West Bengal. She was the former president of National Federation of Indian Women, women's wing of Communist Party of India. As a woman activist, her efforts in demanding 1/3^rd of Parliamentary seats in general election is worth mentioning.

She is related to Kumaramangalam political family of Tamil Nadu, with members practising different types of political ideologies. Noted politician Lalitha Kumaramangalam is her grand-niece. Lalitha's mother, Kalyani Mukherjee was her niece, who got married into a political family of Tamil Nadu. Thus she is related to Mohan Kumaramangalam and his son Rangarajan Kumaramangalam. Her husband Biswanath Mukherjee was also a politician and MLA. Well-known politician and former Chief Minister of Bengal, Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee was her brother-in-law (Biswanath Mukherjee’s brother).

Geeta Mukherjee was born on 8 January 1924 in South Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India. She got married to Biswanath Mukherjee in 1942 and after that she turned fully active in politics. She completed her graduation in art subjects. She became an elected member of Communist Party of India, Bengal for the first time in 1946. Since then she has been fully associated with the same party for more than 5 decades. She became a Member of Party’s National Executive Committee in 1981. She is an author of a few books for children also.
