Gayathrie Shankar, shortly called Gayathrie is a popular actress of Tamil cinema, best known for portraying the lead role in the movie described as cult classic comedy - Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom. She was paired with Vijay Sethupathi and the movie marked the directorial debut of Balaji Tharaneetharan. N. Krishna's unreleased film - Yen Ippadi Mayakkinai is her acting debut and later she played lead roles in movies like Rummy, Mathaapoo, Ponmaalai Pozhudhu etc. Mellisai and Ula are her upcoming projects, where her chemistry with Vijay Sethupathi is being re-created for the movie, Mellisai.  

She was born and brought up in Bangalore to Tamilian parents. She completed Bachelor's degree in Psychology to pursue a career in this field, though acting happened later. She got her first film offer at the age of 17 while studying plus two. She was quite thrilled with her first film offer. However her first film, Yen Ippadi Mayakkinai is unreleased. The actress had stage fright and was petrified of public speaking during her first few shorts, which she overcame later. She had around two months of rigorous training, including bike riding. She took it so seriously and when the movie went unreleased, it was a disappointment as well.

The psychological thriller 18 Vayasu was her first release which was a failure at box office, despite being a new attempt by its director R. Panneerselvam. It was followed by Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, which made her popular, though the movie exclusively belongs to Vijay Sethupathi. Her scenes were shot at Kizhapazhur. Though she worked with him in Rummy, there were no combination scenes. She plays the role of Priya, a very normal middle class girl in his upcoming flick – Ula and a music teacher Meera in Mellisai.
