Gautam Chattopadhyay Biography

Gautam Chattopadhyay was an Indian musician and singer who formed India’s first musical band in the year 1975. His band was named Moheener Ghoraguli, which brought him international fame. He was also known as a theater personality, filmmaker and ethnographer. He played many Indian and Western instruments with flair. Ranjon Ghoshal, one of the founder member and lyricist of his musical band is his nephew. He used to play the lead guitar in a band called The Urge during his college days. He has also directed a few documentary films.

 

He was born on 1 June 1948 in Bengal. He has been associated with music since his college days. He was the guitarist of a musical band during his college days. Members of this troupe were mostly Anglo Indians who performed in pubs like Trincas and Moulin Rouge at Park Street of Kolkata during the 1960s. He has been associated with political movements of students during his college days at Presidency College in Kolkata. It was during the time of late 60s and early 70s in Bengali campuses and this movement was named as Naxal Movement. After studies he worked as a Medical representative in Jabalpur and then in Bhopal. Yet he has been associated with his real passion of life during this time – Music.

 

In the early 1970’s, he returned back to Kolkata where he started a new band. The other members of the band were his first cousin Ranjon Ghoshal, his brothers Pradip Chattopadhyay, Biswanath Chattopadhyay, and his friends - Abraham Mazumder, Tapesh Bandopadhyay and Tapash Das. The band formed in the year 1975 was named Moheener Ghoraguli, which composed music in Bengal that was never heard before. He made a few films for which he composed music. His first film Nagmoti won the President's Medal at the National Film Awards in 1983.
