Garima Singh Biography

Garima Singh is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. She currently represents the Amethi Vidhan Sabha constituency in UP state assembly since 2017. She is the first wife of noted Congress politician and parliamentarian, Sanjay Singh, and the conflicts with Sanjay Singh’s second wife Ameeta Singh on the inheritance dispute over the royal place Bhupathi Bhavan where Sanjay Singh resides drew media attention a lot in 2014. Garima defeated Ameeta Singh in the state assembly elections for Amethi constituency, and she got a lot of support from the locals who claim her to be the real queen. In fact her husband was adapted to the royal family prior to the abolition of all royal privileges in India, which she lost rights after her marriage with Sanjay Singh broke, and Sanjay Singh accepted Ameeta as his wedded wife.

Garima Singh belongs to a royal family in Uttar Pradesh. She married politician Sanjay Singh and had three children. Sanjay Singh also claims to be married to Syed Modi's widow, Ameeta. The mutual divorce between Singh and Garima was declared void by High Court and Supreme Court in 1995. Despite the rulings, Sanjay maintains that Ameeta is his legally wedded wife. In 1989, Garima Singh, who was the scion of the royal family of Amethi, was turned away from the gates of Bhupathi Bhavan, where she resided with her husband and children till then. An inheritance dispute over the royal place between the two wives was witnessed in 2014, more than three decades later. The people from adjoining villages came out to support her and it resulted in clashes.

In 2014 state elections, despite Garima didn’t claim to have any political background, she defeated two-time MLA and her rivalry Ameeta Singh. She earned a lot of sympathy votes and also support from locals who wanted their queen back to palace. Her victory in the elections was people’s views on everlasting family drama which lagged for many decades. Interestingly both the contestants filled Sanjay Singh’s name in the spouse column for the election affidavits.
