Hangal was born in Dharwad in 1913. She didn’t get good education. Her father Chikkurao Nadiger was an agriculturist and her mother Ambabai, a vocalist of Carnatic music. Her family shifted to Hubli in 1928 from where she got initial training in Hindustani music. Her initial training was started at the age of 13 from Krishnacharya Hulgur. Yet through hard work and determination, she established as one of the leading female vocalists of the time. She performed all over India and for All India Radio stations until 1945. She started with light music, including bhajan and thumri and later moved on to Khyal. She later refused to sing in light classical music.
