Ganga Sitharasu Biography

Ganga Sitharasu is a noted south Indian playback singer from Kozhikode, Kerala. She extensively worked with A. R. Rahman during the late 1990s and early 2000s, and is also known for giving some memorable songs composed by M. M. Keeravani. She predominantly sings for Tamil movies, and has also done a few Telugu and Kannada movies too. Ganga is married to V. Sitharasu, a leading photographer in the Tamil film industry. She started her film journey with Malayalam movies in the mid-1990s. She sang the classical music based Sooryamshuvoro aside Yesudas for 1994 Mohanlal-Shobana starrer Pakshe, and very soon entered Tamil movies.

 

Her birth name is Ganga Krishnan, and she is known by Ganga Sitharasu after her marriage. She is married to noted still photographer of film industry, V. Sitharasu. Ganga hails from Kozhikode, Kerala, though she is mostly associated with Tamil films. Ganga was born on 16th December at Kozhikode to professors. Since childhood, she learnt Carnatic music. But she was not serious about a career in music then. She won prizes for Carnatic music and light music competitions since her school days. During her college days, many of her friends encouraged her to get into films, and that’s how she decided to try her luck in film industry, which she succeeded.

 

Her first lead song was released in 1995 which was in Malayalam movie, Pakshe. The break was given by Johnson. S. A. Rajkumar gave her first break in Tamil movies through Ponmanam in 1997 and Keervani gave her the first Telugu song in the year 1999. It was A. R. Rahman who helped her to establish in the film industry as a playback singer. Her voice was used by Rahman for the first time to record the song, "Kokku Saiva Kokku" for Muthu, and later gave her opportunities through the movies – Taj Mahal, Star, Paarthale Paravasam etc.
