Ganga Prasad Vimal Biography

Ganga Prasad Vimal is a Hindi writer, also known as the father of the "Akahani" revolution in Hindi literature. He writes poems, novels and short stories, and has translated numerous works to Hindi. He has also served as an editor for some Hindi magazines. He has extensively worked for many projects related to dictionaries and material related to knowledge of languages. He worked as Professor at Center of Indian Language, School of Language, JNU and retired as head of the department. He has also served as a guide to several PhD and MPhil students, during his stint with Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Ganga Prasad Vimal was born in 1939 in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand state. He was educated in Garhwal, Rishikesh, Allahabad, Yamunanagar and Punjab. He continued his studies at Hyderabad, and studied at Summer School of Linguistics, Osmania University. He also received University Fellowship of Punjab University for his brilliance in studies. He received Doctor of Philosophy in 1965 and the same year, he got married to Kamlesh Anamika. The couple had two children.

He worked as a Research Fellow for three years from 1961 to 1964 at Punjab University. Later he was into teaching profession for many years till his retirement. He worked in different universities and colleges, where he taught Hindi and also assisted students for their research works. He worked as Research Supervisor at Jakir Hussain College, Delhi University from 1964 to 1989. After that he has held many high administrative positions as an educationalist.

Through his works he has urged and showed his concern to save Himalayas and nearby areas, and preserving trees and nature as well. Some of his poetry collections include – Pachaas Kavitayen, Vijjap, Bodhi Vriksh, Itna Kuchh, Main Wahan Hoon, Alikhit-Adikhat, Kuchh To Hai, Khabren aur Anya Kavitayen, Talisman, Sannate Se Muthbhed etc.
