G. V. Atri Biography

G. Vijayakumar Atri, popularly known as G. V. Atri was a noted Kannada singer who died at the age of 35, when he was at the peak of his career. He lost his life in a tragic incident occurred on April 30, 2000. He lost his life, along with his 5 family members while taking bath at a river at Sringeri. Thus Kannada music industry lost a singing talent at a young age. He was popularly known as ”Junior P. B. Sreenivas” as his singing style and voice matched the music legend, P. B. Sreenivas. He was verse in sugama sangeeth, a form of modern light music. He has also composed more than 1000 songs belonging to devotional, folk, patriotic and children categories. As a playback singer of Kannada movies, he has sung for about 15 films. In his memory many awards have been instituted.

 

At first, he was drawn towards Hindustani music and took formal learning from Sheshadri Gavai of Bangalore. But later he was drawn towards sugama sangeetha. Thus he started learning this form of music, which is regarded as modern style of singing similar to folk and light music. Apart from performing live, he also did playback singing formovies though few in number. He was a member of the Karnataka Sangeetha Nrithya Academy and was very enthusiastic in conducting events, music concerts, competitions as well as sugama sangeetha seminars.

 

He is the founder of the music school named “Sangeetha Ganga” which promoted young talents. Though his contribution to film industry was negligibly small, he contributed in the form of sugama sangeetha as well as devotional, romantic and kids’ songs.
