G. N. Ratanpuri Biography

Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri, shortly called G. N. Ratanpuri is a well-known politician from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. A former parliamentarian, he was very vocal in the Parliament with regard to the Kashmir issue and criticized government for wrong policies in the issue of hanging of Afzal Guru. He is the first parliamentarian from Jammu and Kashmir to have filed a Privilege Motion against the Public Functionaries of the state. During the Joint Sessions of Parliament, he disrupted President’s address holding black placards in both hands, demanding return of the mortal remains of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru.

 

He was born in 1954 in Ratnipora of Pulwama District, Jammu and Kashmir. His father is a local merchant. After initial schooling from his hometown he graduated from the University of Kashmir in the year 1976 and started his career as a journalist with an Urdu daily. He served as the assistant editor of Daily Aftaab for three years and moved to the daily Nawa-e-Subh as editor. Through his efficiency as an editor and journalist he became an influential person within a short time and came into contact with many leaders of Kashmir including the then Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

 

Worked with All India Radio at Srinagar in 1981 he became a Programme Officer of UPSC and rose to many positions. With the new millennium he became one of the prominent interviewers of Kashmir. He came into contact with Omar Abdullah in 2004 through a casual visit and later they became good friends. Omar Abdullah was instrumental in bringing him to politics. In 2008 he unsuccessfully contested in Assembly Elections, as a representative of J&K National Conference. Yet he remained in limelight and stayed in a close relationship with Omar Abdullah which paved his way to Rajya Sabha in 2009.
