G. N. R. Kumaravelan Biography

G. N. R. Kumaravelan is a film director associated with Tamil films. Kumaravelan is the son of film director G. N. Rangarajan, known for his frequent association with Kamal Hassan during his early days. He made his directorial debut in 2009, and has stayed almost one decade in the industry. He has directed 4 films up-to-date, of which Haridas is best among all. He received a nomination for Filmfare award best director award for this movie. The movie also bagged numerous other nominations in the leading categories like best movie, best male actor etc. The movie was screened at the Singapore Darpan Film Festival, the first south Indian film to achieve this feat and won praises. Ninaithale Inikkum, Yuvan Yuvathi and Wagah are his other releases.


His full name is G. N. Rangaraja Kumaravelan. He was born on 22nd November, 1974 into a family with filmy background. His father G. N. Rangarajan has done a few movies in Tamil cinema. Following his father’s footsteps, Kumaravelan also reached direction field in films. He joined film industry as an assistant director in the mid-1990s, and has worked under Kamal Hassan and Balu Mahendra during this period.


In 2009, he marked his directorial debut with Ninaithale Inikkum, a remake of 2006 Malayalam campus thriller film, Classmates. Prithviraj reprised the lead role he played in the original, while Priyamani played the female lead. The movie fared well at box office, though couldn’t replicate the success of the original. The director is best known for his work in 2013 film, Haridas starring Kishore and Sneha. It told the story of autistic child, played by Prithviraj Das. The film received positive reviews and bagged many awards too.
