G. Karthikeyan Biography

G. Karthikeyan is one of the leading congress leaders of Kerala. At present, August 31, 2013 he is the speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly under Oomen Chandy’s ministry. Currently he is the Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A) from Aruvikkara constituency, Thiruvananthapuram.  He has been the only elected Vice President of K.P.C.C. He served as the State president of Kerala Students Union. He was a Student member of senate of Kerala University and Secretary of Kerala University Union. He is also an A.I.C.C. Member.

 

G. Karthikeyan was born at Varkala on 20 January 1949 as the son of N. P. Gopala Pillai and Vanajakshy Amma. He entered politics through students’ movement and was active in politics during college days. He later completed LLB course. He has served as the State president of Kerala Students Union and was a Student member of senate of Kerala University and Secretary of Kerala University Union. He also held various posts in Youth Congress, including State General Secretary and State President. He was the General Secretary of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Apart from these positions, he has also served as the Chief Whip and Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

 

In 1995, he became Minister for Electricity in Ministry headed by A.K. Antony. In 2001, he was the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, again in A.K. Antony Ministry.  For the first time, he was elected from Thiruvananthapuram North in the year 1982. He defeated K. Anirudhan of CPI (M) by 8,846 votes. He has won successively for 4 times from Aryanad, Thiruvananthapuram thus achieving a hat-trick. He won in the years – 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 and in all these elections, his opponent was from RSP. In 1991, he defeated K. Pankajakshan. In 1996, he defeated K.P Sankaradas and in the next two elections, he won over RSP candidates, G. Arjunan and T.J Chandrachoodan respectively. In the last elections held in the year 2011, he defeated Sreedharan Nair of RSP with a majority of 10,674 votes.
