Faturananda Biography

Faturananda was a humorous and satirical writer belonging to Odiya literature. He is best known as a short story writer. He used "Phaturananda" as a pen name in all his writings. His real name is Ramachandra Mishra. Nakata Chitrakar and Sahi Mahabharat are most popular among his literal works. He established "Kantakabi Award" in the name of Laxmikanta Mohapatra to promote writers from Odia language. He was also the founder of Sarasa Sahitya Samiti, a literal organization. He published his autobiography work, Mo Phuta Dangara Kahani in 1989. As a writer, he has contributed poetry, plays, Children's Literature, translations, novels and short stories.

Ramachandra Mishra was born on June 1, 1915 in 1915 in Jhanjirimangala of Cuttack, Odisha in British India. Bidyadhar Mishra and Subhadra Mishra were his parents. Though he contributed different forms of literal works to Odia literature, he is best known for his short stories. Initially most of his short stories were of tragic nature, before he switched over to satire writing style.

After publication of “Dagaro” from Cuttack, he started noticing humour stories in it. But he realized that most of them have almost the same plot with slight differences in presentation, and mostly end in a happy knot. Most of them described romance of college girl and boy, and the whole story revolves around them. So he decided to write humour stories, but never adding romance into the plot. Till end, he followed the principle.

Known for his distinctly unique and original style of writing, he used simple and colloquial language with a natural flow for writing stories and other forms of literal works. His works are quite noticed for its satire element. Apart from many short stories, he has published one novel named Nakata Chitrakar in 1953.
