Farooq Abdullah Biography

Farooq Abdullah is an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir many times since 1982. He is the son of Sheikh Abdullah who is also a politician. He was born on 21st October 1937 in Soura in Jammu and Kashmir in India. He is a doctor of medicine. He studied at Tyndale Biscoe School.

He married Molly, a British nurse and has one son Omar Abdullah and three daughters. His son Omar Abdullah is also a politician and is the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah was appointed as the president of the National Conference in August 1981. He was a novice in political field at that time except for one qualification that he was the son of the Kashmir National Conference leader Sheikh Abdullah.

When his father died in 1982, he became the Chief Minister of the state which was later dismissed by the Governor and replaced with the pro-Congress government headed by Ghulam Mohammed Shah. After that in 1986 an alliance was formed among National Conference and Congress and Farooq Abdullah became the Chief Minister again.

The newly formed alliance won in the 1987 elections and this period witnessed the return of the trained militants from Pakistan and many other incidents including kidnapping of the daughter of the Union Home Minister. Abdullah government was dismissed and the state came under President’s rule.

He became the Chief Minister of the State again in 1996 for the fifth time. In 2002, he was selected to Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir. He was again elected in 2009. He was made as a Cabinet Minister in the United Progressive Alliance. He is a well know women admirer and has made remarks on beauty of women openly many times.
