Fali Sam Nariman Biography

Fali Sam Nariman is an Indian jurist, born in Rangoon. One of the top jurists of independent India known for handling many high profile cases, he served as the senior advocate to the Supreme Court of India since 1971, and also remained President of the Bar Association of India since 1991, and Additional Solicitor General of India May 1972- June 1975. For his overall contributions to the field he has been showered with numerous honours. Government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan (1991) and Padma Vibhushan (2007), and he is also a recipient of Gruber Prize for Justice in 2002. He remained a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha during 1999–2005.

 

Fali Sam Nariman was born on born 10 January 1929 in Rangoon, Myanmar into a Parsi family. He schooled from Shimla and graduated from Mumbai. Later he took LLB degree from the Government Law College, Mumbai in 1950 and stood first in the university exams. His father initially wanted him to write the Indian Civil Service Examination. But as he couldn’t afford the expenses, Nariman opted for law studies.

 

Nariman started his law practice at the Bombay High Court. After 22 years of practice he became a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India in 1971, a position he holds till now. Jamsetjee Kanga was his mentor. Nariman was instrumental to the development of the Indian Constitution's Law, and served as Additional Solicitor General of India from May 1972 to 25 June 1975. However he resigned from the post on the declaration of Emergency by Indira Gandhi. Nariman argued in favour of Union carbide in the Bhopal gas disaster case in 1984. But later he admitted it as his mistake.
