Faiz Ahmad Faiz Biography

Faiz Ahmad Faiz was one of the greatest poets of Indian sub-continent who lived during the period – 1911 to 1984. As an Urdu poet, he gave outstanding contributions to Urdu literature. Though born in Kala Kader, Sialkot District of British India, he settled in Lahore Pakistan after India partition of 1947.     Naqsh-e-Faryadi, Dast-e-Saba, Zindan-Nama, Dast-e-Tah-e-Sung, Mere Dil Mere Musafir and Sar-e-Wadi-e-Sina are among his major works. All his works have been compiled together to form a single book titled - Nuskha Haa-e-Wafa. As a doyen of Urdu poetry, he has inspired a lot of writers and thinkers later. He was a winning of Lenin Peace Prize and known for his leftist ideologies. Though accused of atheism, many of his works had a relationship with religions, most notably Islam. He was also influenced by Sufi and poetry traditions.

 

Faiz Ahmed Faiz was born on February 13, 1911, in Sialkot of British India, now a part of Pakistan. He was born into a wealthy landlord family. His father was a prominent lawyer and a member of an elite literary circle too. He lost his mother soon after his birth and later his father took him to an Islamic school, Moulvi Ibrahim Sialkoti in 1916. He completed Bachelor’s degree in Arabic, followed by a master’s degree in English, from the Government College in Lahore in 1932. He also took Master’s in Urdu. Faiz began a teaching career at M.A.O. College in Amritsar and taught at various colleges later.

 

He married Alys George, a British expatriate, who converted to Islam and the couple had two daughters. He served in British Indian Army during World War Second and after Indian independence; he served as the editor of The Pakistan Times. He was arrested for Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case in 1951 and sentenced to death, and got released 4 years later. Two of his great works - Dast-e Saba and Zindan Namah, focus on his life in prison. His poems translated to Russian language got Lenin Peace Prize in 1963. He settled in Karachi and worked as editor of different magazines.
