Emani Sankara Sastry Biography

Emani Sankara Sastry was a renowned Veena player of Carnatic music of the second half of 20th century. A recipient of numerous awards and honours like Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1973, Sahitya Kala Parishad award, Padma Shri and Doctorate of Andhra University, he has also done some monumental works in orchestration. He was also given the honorary title of chaturdandi panditaha by the Vice President of India. He won the admiration of the world known violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who personally invited him for the Music festival held at Paris on January 8, 1974. A renowned guru, among his successful students includes Chitti babu, V. Saraswathi, M. Y. Kama Sastry, S. N. Satyamurthy etc. He has participated in music festivals across India.

 

Sastry was born into a celebrated musical family on September 23, 1922 in Draksharamam, Andhra Pradesh. His father Emani Achyutarama Sastri was famed Veena artist, who initiated Sastry to the world of music at a younger age. He strictly followed traditional way of playing Veena and full basement in the learning was given by his father. Regularly performed at concerts since young he got opportunity to play duets aside Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Gopal Krishan and many leading artists of music field. After graduation from Andhra University he moved to Chennai and joined Gemini Studios. He worked as a Music director for almost a decade.

 

In 1959 he joined AIR as producer of Music and rose to the position of Director and composer of the National Orchestra. Emani has many noted disciples and he introduced numerous young students to the musical world. He was an open-minded experimenter, and also evolved contemporary themes, which was quite lacking during his period. A few days before his death in 1987, he was felicitated by his most prodigious disciple Chitti Babu in Guntur.
