Eluvathingal Devassy Jemmis Biography

Eluvathingal Devassy Jemmis is a Professor of theoretical chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Earlier he was the Director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram. His primary area of research is applied theoretical chemistry. He formulated Jemmis mno rules which represent unified rules for predicting and systematizing structures of compounds. These rules are addition and extensions to polyhedral skeletal electron pair theory. An equivalent of the structural chemistry of carbon is another noted work of Jemmis.

Born on 31 October 1951 in Chevoor, Kerala, he completed degree from University College, Thiruvananthapuram. He took MSc from IIT Kanpur. He joined Princeton University (1973) under the supervision of Profs Paul von Rague Schleyer and John Pople. Then he spent one semester at the University of Munich and four semesters at the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg. He earned PhD degree from Princeton in the year 1978.

He joined the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad in the year 1980. He became professor in 1990 and Dean in 2002. Jemmis was a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, honorary Professor at JNCASR, Adjunct Professor at ICTS-TIFR and a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Computational Quantum Chemistry of the University of Georgia, Athens. In 2005 he joined Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry at Indian Institute of Science. In 2008, he took the responsibility to start IISER, Thiruvananthapuram.

He dedicated his time to study structure and reactivity of molecules, clusters and solids using theoretical methods and formulated Jemmis mno rules. Jemmis mno rules for polyhedral boranes have found a place in textbooks in different syllabuses all over the world. He has received numerous honours throughout his career including - Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, Trieste, Italy.
