Dushyant Kumar Biography

Dushyant Kumar was a noted modern poet from UP associated with Hindi literature in the 20th century. He is credited to be the first Hind Ghazal singer of India. He was also a prolific dramatist and Litterateur who wrote poems, plays, ghazals as well as short stories. Kumar died at a comparatively young age of 42 on 31 December 1975, due to a cardiac arrest in Bhopal. He was survived by his wife - Rajeshwari Tyagi. Noted writer Dr. Harivanshrai Bachchan was his contemporary. His poem "Ho Gayi hai Peer Parvat Si" was a great inspiration to Arvind Kejriwal during the Anti-Corruption Movement in India during the period 2011-2012.

 

Kumar was born on 1 September 1933 in Rajpur Navada Village of Bijnor District, present day Uttar Pradesh state. He belonged to a Tyagi family. He completed Post-graduation in Hindi Literature from Allahabad University. His literal career too started from the same place where he completed his studies. He actively participated in Seminars at Parimal Academy of Literature and was also associated with Naye Patte, Akashwani and Rajbhasha Section in Madhya Pradesh. Corruption was the main theme of his songs, which inspired youngsters and aspiring writers a lot. Later his poem "Ho Gayi hai Peer Parvat Si" was used by AAP Party during anti-corruption movement across North India.

 

Kahan To Tay Tha Chiragan, Badh ki sambhavanayen, Ho Gai Hai Peer Parvat Si, Mat Kaho, Kahan To Tay Tha Chiragan, Ek Aashirwad, Ab To Path Yahi Hai, Tujhe Kaise Bhool Jaun, Tujhe Kaise Bhool Jaun and Soona Ghar are among his popular poems. It was during his life time, he brought the Hindi ghazal to the fore, with his celebrated collection Saaye Mein Dhoop. Later Hindi lyricists of Bollywood films have been inspired a lot by his ghazals. Many of his poems and ghazals have been later used in the picturisation of Indian movies also. 'Saye Me Dhoop' still remains his most popular ghazal collection.

 

While doing PG at Allahabad, Dushyant frequently used to visit Dr. Harivanshrai Bachchan, a great Hindi poet. Thus he was acquainted of Amitabh Bachchan too, who later became an actor. He showered praises on the actor after watching his performance in the hit movie 'Deewar' and wrote a letter to him. Years later, Amitabh Bachchan displayed that letter at a museum in Bhopal. A copy of the letter was recently handed over to the museum, named after Dushyant, by his wife.
