Draupadi Murmu Biography

Draupadi Murmu is an Indian politician from Mayurbhanj, Odisha who currently serves as the Governor of Jharkhand since May 2015. She is the first woman Governor of Jharkhand, and also the first woman and tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed as a governor in an Indian state. Draupadi is associated with state politics, and is associated with Bharatiya Janata party. She became MLA twice on BJP ticket from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009), and held the seat when Naveen Patnaik of Janata dal came into prominence in state elections.

Draupadi Murmu was born on 20 June 1958 in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. She has faced some tragedies and losses in her personal life. She lost both her husband and two sons. She has one daughter. She started her career as a teacher, before she joined state politics in themed-1990s. She has been quite active in regional politics. She was elected as the councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997. Then she served as the vice-president of BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha. She got elected from Rairangpur assembly constituency in the year 2000. During this term as MLA, she served as Minister of State with independent charge for Commerce and Transport from 2000 to 2002, followed by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development till 2004, when BJP formed coalition government in Odisha along with Biju Janata Dal in year 2000.

She was born into a tribal community, who later turned to a prominent leader from Odisha. Draupadi Murmu came to spotlight in India, when she emerged as a favourite of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the post of President of India, when President Pranab Mukherjee set to leave the Raisina Hill in 2017. She has been serving as Governor of Jharkhand then, a post she holds still now.
