Draupadi Ghimiray Biography

Draupadi Ghimiray is a social worker from Sikkim best known for her distinguished service in providing comprehensive service with the persons with disabilities. She is the founder of Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samity. Her NGOs help people with artificial limbs and hands and also provides free cleft placate surgeries. She is a medical nurse by profession, who later got into social service. For her efforts and social services, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2019. Though she had offers from government and also politics, she refused them all to work for the disabled persons. She also remained unmarried.

 

Draupadi Ghimiray hails from Gangtok, Sikkim. She is originally a nurse at the STNM. She remained unmarried throughout her life, and also by turning down offers for Government posts and refusing MLA tickets from SDF, she devoted her entire life to the physically handicapped of Sikkim. She leads a remarkably simple and austere life, working for the welfare of physically challenged people in Sikkim. For the welfare of persons with disabilities, she founded an NGO - Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samity and still fully active in social life. She has also been awarded by state government and other agencies for her selfless contributions.

 

She, along with Muktaben Pankajkumar Dagli from Gujarat was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019 for social work done by them for the welfare of India's Divyang community. She earned the much awaited national recognition in 2018 and her achievement was welcomed by public. She belongs to Gorkha community and another Gorkha to be honoured with a Padma Shri this year is the Indian National Football Team Captain Sunil Chhetri.
