Dr Ganesh Biography

Dr. Ganesh is a leading musician and vocalist in Carnatic music in the present times. He is the foremost disciple of the legendary Maharajapuram Santhanam, who carries forward his legacy. He was instrumental in setting up “Maharajapuram Santhanam Rasikas Trust” in the year 1993. The trust aims at conducting a concert series in memory of Great Guru, concluding on the 23rd June – the day his Guru gave his last concert. The trust also aims at promoting classical carnatic music among youngsters globally. Ganesh is also associated with Irai Isai Payanam, is an innovative method through which remuneration of artists go for noble causes like renovation of old temples. Dr. Ganesh is a veterinary doctor by profession who currently works with a Chennai-based financial services company, apart from his carnatic concerts.

 

He was born on 24th May 1968 in Mettur, Salem District of Tamil Nadu into a family of artists and musicians. He belonged to the lineage of Koteeshwara Iyer and Kavi Kunjara Bharathigal. His father M. Radhakrishnan is a musician, singer, drama artist and enthusiast. His mother R Vasantha is a creative handicraft artist and a great patron of Carnatic music. His wife Deepa Ganesh is also associated with the world of Carnatic music. She is a professional carnatic singer and a guru who teaches many disciples. It was his father who encouraged him to love music and take it as profession. He used to buy Maharajapuram Santhanam's music cassettes for young Ganesh.

 

Ganesh initially learnt music from Thanjavour T. Mahalinga Iyer, who was not a performer but a teacher. Later he learnt from Thirukarugavur Srinivasa Raghavan lived in Thanjavur. During those days he started admiring Maharajapuram Santhanam and was fortunate to be chosen as his student. By that time, he got a seat for veterinary course. Though he started off with thrice days a week, after a few weeks Guru insisted Ganesh to stay with him. Thus he learnt music in ‘Gurukulam’ style, and spent 6 years there. By that time he completed veterinary course in 1992. When he got an attractive job in Coimbatore, his guru let him go. Later he carried forward his guru’s legacy and still involved with it.
