Doddanna Biography

Doddanna is a character artist associated with Kannada cinema and theater. Started his career as a stage actor, he has done over 500 roles on big screen. A versatile actor, he has portrayed villains, policemen and other characters and has become most successful as a comedian. This actor has completed over 35 years in the film industry since early 1980s. He was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at South Indian International Movie Awards for Katari Veera Surasundarangi in the year 2012. Apart from Kannada movies he has also appeared in Jai (2004) and Ainthaam Padai (2009).

Doddanna was born on 11 November 1949 in Arsikere, Hassan district, Mysore State. He is the youngest son to the couple and so he was named after his grandfather Kadle Doddappa. During his younger days, he was associated with Vighneshwara Kala Sangha theater troupe as a part time actor and started his career as an actor. He worked in a steel factory in Bhadravathy in those days. Later he formed a theater troupe called Gandharva Ranga, aside a group of friends. Later, he entered the Kannada film industry as a character actor in the early 1980s.

His career was at its peak during mid-1980s to 1990s when it was difficult to imagine a Kannada film without Doddanna playing a role in it, at least a cameo role. One of the most versatile actors of Kannada films, he fit to any type of character roles. Namma Oora Devathe in 1986 was his first credited role and he shot to prominence through Anjada Gandu released in 1988. Since then he became a star of Kannada film industry.
