Dnyaneshwar Agashe Biography

Dnyaneshwar Agashe was an Indian businessman, cricketer, cricket administrator and philanthropist who lived in Maharashtra. He was the son of Chandrashekhar Agashe, an Indian industrialist and lawyer who was the founder of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Ltd. His business legacy is carried forward by his sons, Ashutosh Agashe and Mandar Agashe who are successful entrepreneurs. Ashutosh is a former Ranji cricketer who has played domestic cricket with Maharashtra team while Mandar is a successful musician and singer who has released a few pop albums since late 1990s. He has one daughter too. Dnyaneshwar Agashe remained an administrator in Maharashtra Cricket Association for many years, and also Board of Control for Cricket in India.

 

Dnyaneshwar Agashe was born into a business family in Maharashtra on 17 April 1942. Pune is his hometown. He was the son of well-known industrialist and lawyer Chandrashekhar Agashe who served as the President of the Bhor State Council from 1932 to 1934. His mother Dwarka Gokhale was a great niece of Bapu Gokhale, a general under Peshwa Baji Rao II of the Maratha Empire. Dnyaneshwar had 10 siblings of whom 8 survived to adulthood. He married Rekha Agashe, and had three children. He was also related to Ashutosh Phatak – a musician and Dilip Dandekar - managing director of Kokuyo Camlin Ltd as cousins-in-law.

 

Agashe joined the Maharashtra Cricket Association in 1969 and became its executive chairman in 1989. He served as its member for long two decades. He joined father’s business firm in 1983. He was elected twice as the vice-president and once as the treasurer of the BCCI. He also served as the vice-president of Board of Control for Cricket in India during 1995-1999. He was elected as the Chairman of the Maharashtra Cricket Association in 2004.
