Diwaliben Bhil Biography

Diwaliben Bhil was a Gujarati folk singer and playback singer who lived during the period, 2 June 1943 – 19 May 2016. She has been recognized as a "Gujarat ni Koyal" by music lovers. For his contributions towards folk art and culture, she was honoured with fourth highest civilian Padma Shri by government of India in 1990. Government of Gujarat awarded her the Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar. She has been a regular artist on Gujarati radio and her talents were known to the outer world very late. She was a self-taught singer, and did not receive any formal education in music. She sang large number of folk songs, garbas, bhajans and film songs.

 

Diwaliben Punjabhai Bhil was born on 2 June 1943 in Dalkhania village, Amreli district, Gujarat into a tribal community. Punjabhai and Monghiben were her parents. Her real name is Ladhiya. Her community traditionally performed folk songs and inspired by her mother, Ladhiya too took the same profession. She dropped out of school and started singing traditional garba songs at an early age. She was a self-taught singer. She moved to Junagadh at the age of nine, following his father’s transfer there, and she got married at the same age. Her marriage was declared null and void just two days after the marriage ceremony, and she never married again.

 

10 years later she got a job in a hospital where she worked for ten years. After that she worked as a domestic help in nurses' quarters of the Junagadh Public Hospital. Later she lived with her brother. Her talent was first spotted by Gujarati folk singer Hemu Gadhvi in 1964 who arranged her the first recording for AIR Rajkot station, for which she got 5 rupees as payment. She also got opportunity to perform in Delhi. Musician Kalyanji heard her during her stage performance in Mumbai, and gave her the first break to playback singing. Her song "Paap Taru Parkash Jadeja” from the film Jesal Toral became an instant success and later she continued with her live performances as well as recording songs.
