Disha Vakani Biography

Disha Vakani is a successful television actress. She has also acted in a few movies and TV commercials. She is popular with comedy series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on SAB TV where she played the role of Daya Jethalal Gada. Her pairing with Dilip Joshi in this comedy was well received by Indian audience. She has also appeared in a few Bollywood movies in bit roles. Devdas, Jodha Akbar, Love Story 2050, C Kkompany, Jaana... Let's Fall in Love and Phool Aur Aag are a few such. She played Aishwarya Rai’s friend’s role in Devdas and Jodha Akhbar. She has also made guest appearance in Instant Khichdi and Khichdi of Star Plus.

Disha was born on 17 August 1978. She was brought up in Ahmedabad. Her father Bhim Vakani was a noted personality of Gujarati theatre. When young, Disha has also acted in a few theatre plays. She graduated in the Dramatic arts from Gujarat College in Ahmedabad. Vakani started her career as a stage actor and has worked in popular plays like Kamal Patel v/s Dhamal Patel and Lali Lila. Her first big screen appearance was for the movie, Devdas in 2002. Though she appeared in bit roles in a few films, her real break came through the comedy series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on SAB TV. Actor Dilip Joshi played her husband’s role and their chemistry was well appreciated. This particular comedy series make Disha a household name. Seeing her popularity, her role was expanded also.

She won Indian Television Academy Awards for Best Actress - Comedy twice in 2008 and 2009 for the role played in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. She has also won New Talent Awards (comic) and ZEE Gold awards for the same comic role. Disha has also appeared in a few television commercials. ‘Tide’ commercial is most popular.
