Diptendu Pramanick Biography

Diptendu Pramanick was a noted film personality from Bengal. He was the founder secretary of the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association in Kolkata. He was the elder son of Sudhamoy Pramanick, a noted advocate from Bengal known as a social activist during India’s freedom struggle. He was a film fraternity who acted as an interface between the entertainment industry of eastern India and the Government.

 

He was born on 18 July 1910 in Kolkata. His primary schooling was done at his hometown. Alter he studied at Coronation School of Raiganj, the place where his father practised as a lawyer. In 1926 he returned to Kolkata and completed matriculation. He took Intermediate examinations in Science in 1928. He then joined the Scottish Church College, Kolkata. As his father was involved in freedom struggle movement, since young, Diptendu got opportunity to meet great Indian personalities. He got opportunity to interact with revolutionary ideas of freedom fighters, particularly Subhas Chandra Bose. He completed graduation in science from   Asutosh College, University of Calcutta in 1931. Then he worked as the Secretary to the then Mayor of Kolkata, Santosh Kumar Basu.

 

As he was interested in literature, he used to attend literary conferences in Bengal regularly. 12th Prabasi Banga-Sahitya Sammelan was inaugurated by Rabindranath Tagore in Kolkata in 1934, he was a member of the Reception Committee was chaired by Ramananda Chatterjee. After the completion of Basu’s term as Mayor, Diptendu became the Liaison Officer of Civil Defense and in the Publicity Section of the Commercial Museum. In 1942, he became Liaison Officer, Civil Defense.

 

Later he came in close contact with personalities of the Bengali film industry of Kolkata and thus became a part of the entertainment industry. He joined Bengal Motion Pictures Association in 1948 as Secretary. He was the first secretary of the then expanded Eastern India Motion Picture Association and was instrumental in opening EIMPA’s new offices at Patna and Guwahati.
