Dipa Karmakar Biography

Dipa Karmakar is an Indian artistic gymnast from Agartala. She won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, giving a historic moment to Indian sports, becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to earn an achievement in Common wealth games. She represented Tripura in National Games 2011 winning five golds in Floor, Vault, All Round, Balance beam and Uneven Bars. Her show even overshadowed India's eminent male gymnast, Ashish Kumar of Uttar Pradesh in the National games. In Asian Games 2014 she managed to finish fourth in the vault final, behind top two medalists of Olympic Games and bronze winner at the world championships, which is nothing short of an achievement for an Indian gymnast. She was suffering from ankle injury since she made preparations for Asian games.

 
This girl belongs to Agartala, Tripura, born in the year 1993. She is the daughter of Sports Authority of India weightlifting coach Dulal Karmakar. She is described as the ‘Golden girl of Tripura’. She brought laurels to her state by winning five gold medals at National Senior Gymnastic All Round Championship in Punjab in 2011. She gives its credit to her coach Biswaswar Nandi. She has been senior national winning 5 gold medals for 3 separate occasions.  She later represented India at 2010 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in China.


In 2014 Commonwealth Games she won a bronze medal in the Women's vault final, becoming the first woman gymnast from India to receive a medal in the championship. She is also the second Indian, after Ashish Kumar’s win at 2010 Commonwealth Games. Tripura is known for producing many gymnasts like Mantu Debnath and Kalpan Debnath.
