Dinsha Patel Biography

Dinsha Patel is a veteran politician from Gujarat associated with Indian National Congress. He was a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India representing Kheda constituency. He also served as a Union minister under Manmohan Singh handling different portfolios - Petroleum and Natural Gas, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Mines during the period 2009-2011. He was earlier elected to parliament in 1996. He is a prominent Congress leader in state politics. He has served as an MLA of Gujarat for 5 terms since 1975.

 

He hails from Gujarat. He was born on 25 May 1937 in Baroda, Gujarat. Itola is his hometown. Jhaverbhai Patel and Hiraben J. Patel are his parents. He got married to Kundanben Dinsha Patel on 22 Oct 1972 and the couple has no children. He started his political journey as a youth leader in 1956, and came to spotlight after Maha Gujarat agitation. He has been actively involved with politics since early 1970s. He became a member of Congress party in 1972 in Nadiad Nagar Palika. He got elected to Gujarat Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1975. Since then he has been re-elected to state assembly five times. In 1996 he joined national level politics, contesting for Lok Sabha elections for the first time. He reached parliament for the first time in 1996.

 

He reached parliament for the second time in 2009 and was inducted to Singh's cabinet. He served as Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas (May 2009 - 18 Jan 2011) followed by Minister of State, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Independent Charge) between May 2009 - 18 Jan 2011 and Minister of State, Mines (Independent Charge) between 19 Jan 2011 – 27 October 2012. He served as the Councilor of Nadiad Municipality, 1977-82.
