Dinkar Joshi Biography

Dinkar Joshi is an Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature, who has contributed in the form of novels, short story collections, essay collections and columns. He has published more than 154 books in his six decade long literary career, which includes 45 novels on social, historical, rural and ancient subjects. He was a banker by profession, who has retired from service in 1995, and has dedicated his full time towards writings. One of the highly acclaimed Gujarati writers of present times, he has been conferred with five Gujarat State Sahitya Akademi awards. His works have been translated to different languages, and has 58 translated books in total.

Dinkar Joshi was born on 30 June 1937 in Bhadi Bhandaria village of Bhavnagar district. Lilavati and Maganlal Joshi are his parents. Nagdhaniba village is his ancestral place. He studied history and politics from Gujarat University. He started writing during his teens. He published his first short story in 1954. He worked in banking sector during 1959 – 1995, after which he took voluntary retirement to concentrate on to his writings. He wrote many popular novels which got serialized in some of the leading Gujarati magazines.  His novel Prakash no Padchhayo was simultaneously serialized for Sunday supplement of three dailies.

A few of his popular novels have been adapted to big screen. Apart from authoring books belonging to different genres, he also served as an editor and columnist. His research works on Krishna and Mahatma Gandhi, and also Hindu mythology and epics resulted in publishing of many papers. He also authored several biographical novels. Some of his novels include - Khelo Re Khel Khurshina, Door Door Aara, Aa Pag Nicheno Rasto, Agiyarmi Disha, Jane Ajane, Tan Zankhe Man Roy, Matsyavedh, Adithan Roop, Shesh - Ashesh, Aganpathari, Tarasyan Pagalan Tran, Suraj Dhima Tapo, Barafni Chadar, Sachan Motino Charo, Yakshaprashna, Asahya, Satyano Chahero, Kankuna Suraj Aathamya etc.
