Dinesh Thakur Biography

Dinesh Thakur was a noted Indian theatre director and actor who worked in Bollywood, television as well as theatre. He appeared in supporting roles in Hindi movies as well as wrote story and screenplay. He played the role of Navin, Vidya Sinha’s ex-boyfriend in the critically acclaimed movie, Rajnigandha, which still remains one of his most memorable roles in Hindi movies. He wrote the story and screenplay of Rekha-Vinod Mehra starrer Ghar, which won him Filmfare best story award in the year 1979. ‘Jis Lahore Nahi dekhya’ is his oldest theater production which is still popular. He died on September 20, 2012 due to kidney failure.

 

He was born in 1947. Thakur completed his graduation from Kirori Mal College (KMC), Delhi University. During this time, he was active in theater and has been associated with KMC dramatic society. Mere Apne (1971) written and directed by Gulzar, marked his onscreen debut in a supporting role. Anubhav (1971) and Jalte Badan (1973) were his next two movies. It was 1974 movie Rajnigandha which gained him attention. He worked as second hero to Amol Palekar in this movie. Since early 1970’s he has been active in the film industry portraying numerous supporting roles.

 

A few of his Bollywood films include Ghar, Kalicharan, Parinay, Faisley, Nayya, Karm, Raj dulari, Geetanjali, Palay Khan, Agni Pareeksha, The burning train, Griha pravesh, Aasta, and Aaj ki awaz. Fiza, Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya and Nigehbaan: The Third Eye are his recent appearances. He has also appeared in several television serials like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Star Plus), Shanti (Doordarshan) and La nouvelle malle des Indes (1981) TV mini-series. He established 'Ank Theatre Group' in 1976.
