Dilip Prabhavalkar Biography

Dilip Prabhavalkar is a film, television and theatre actor of Marathi. He is a Marathi writer too, who has authored some plays and children books. He is better known for portraying the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the Bollywood blockbuster of 2006, Lage raho Munnabhai. He reprised the same role in its Telugu remake, Shankar Dada Zindabad too. Though he is a well established stage actor, he became popular nationwide with this single role. Dilip is regarded as one of the finest theatre artists of Marathi drama at present and has theater experience of more than 30 years.

 

Dilip became a graduate from Ramnarain Ruia College, Matunga and then gained a Master's degree in Biophysics and a diploma from BARC, Mumbai. He later worked in a pharmaceutical company and also has been a partner in a video production unit. During this period he was active as a stage actor. His first major performance was in Lobh Nasava Hi Vinanti, playwright by Vijay Tendulkar. In children's and amateur theatre, Prabhavalkar association with Ratnakar Matkari group produced a few memorable roles in Prem Kahani and Aranyak, which presented him state awards as well.

 

It was television serial Chimanrao Gundyabhau which gave him biggest break to television industry. In this television serial he played the role of Chimanrao. Later he recreated this character in his play Hasva Phasvi.His television serials include - Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre, Zopi Gelela Jaga Zala, Kaam Phatte and a few more. In 1991, for the movie Chaukat Raja, he won Maharashtra State Award for Best Actor. Most recently he appeared in Marathi movies like Narbachi wadi, Shala, Deol etc. He has appeared in Bollywood movies like Lage raho Munnabhai, Sankat city, Chupke se, Khilauna bana khalnayak, Sarkar raj and Paheli.
