Digambar Kamat Biography

Digambar Kamat is an Indian politician who is serving as the Chief Minister of Goa. He belongs to the Indian National Congress party. He is the 5th Chief Minister of Goa since 2007. He was born on 8th March 1954 in Margao in Goa. His father is Vasant Kamat. He was originally a businessman and real estate developer. He got his graduation in Science.

He received COSAMB award that is given for improving human life and contribution to Agricultural marketing in the State and Country. The award was given to him by the National Council of State Agricultural Marketing Board, New Delhi. He also received the award of Bakshi Jivabadada Kerkar State Award. He married Asha and has two children.

He came out of Indian National Congress in 1994 joined Bharatiya Janata Party as he was denied the ticket. Later in 2005 he left BJP and returned to Congress. In the government of Pratapsingh Rane, he served as the minister of power, mines, art and culture. He held these portfolios in the Bharatiya Janata Party government headed by Manohar Parrikar. He was chosen as the leader of Congress Legislature party in the meeting conducted at Panaji.

The battle between the state Congress Chief Ravi Naik and former Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane gave him a chance to become the Prime Minister of Goa. He had to face a crisis on 25th July 2007 as his government seemed to break up as it appeared to not have the majority. He is the Trustee of Margao Ambulance Trust, Founder President of Samrat Club, Founder President of Rotaract Club, Margao Founder, Member of Damodar Education Society. He is interested in various sports activities like swimming and badminton. He has visited many countries including Nepal, Thailand, European countries, Malaysia and Singapore.
