Dibakar Banerjee Biography

Dibakar Banerjee is a Bollywood film director known for National award winning movies - Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006) and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008). He has also directed a few television ads of which Coca Cola commercial is most popular. He has also directed the controversial Bollywood movie, Love Sex aur Dhokha loosely based on the infamous 2004 DPS MMS scandal and critically well acclaimed movie, Shanghai released in 2012. All these movies were successful at box office too. He has also directed the segment ‘Star’ of the anthology film, Bombay talkies (2013).

Dibakar Banerjee was born and brought up in Delhi. He completed his schooling from Bal Bharati Public School, Delhi. Later he joined National Institute of Design, Ahmadabad to study visual communications and graphic design. But he left studies in the middle and returned back. He worked as assistant of audio-visual filmmaker Sam Mathews for a while. He started his career as a copywriter first. Then he joined Contract Advertising, Delhi where he got opportunity to work with Pradeep Sarkar. Screenwriter Jaideep Sahni was his colleague who wrote the script of Banerjee’s first movie, Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006).

The movie was well received for its subject and comedy. The movie received Best feature film in Hindi National award also. In 2008, his second movie as a director, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was released. This movie also belongs to the genre of comedy and well received too. The movie received Best Popular Film at National award section. The story and screenplay was written by Dibakar and Urmi Juvekar. This movie is remembered for breakthrough performance of Abhay Deol as an actor too. Love Sex aur Dhokha was the first Indian movie to shoot entirely on Digital Camera. For its controversial subject the movie ran well at theatres too. His 2012 movie, Shanghai received IRDS Film Awards for Social concern - Best direction award. His  upcoming project is Detective Byomkesh Bakshi.
