Dhyan Chand Biography

Dhyan Chand is one of the iconic figures of Indian sports and ranked among the first 5 Indian sportsmen. A discussion of Indian sports without Dhyan Chand is incomplete and still he remains the most popular Indian hockey player all times. He has been a part of Indian hockey team that won gold medal at Olympics in 3 successive times, thus completing a hat-trick - (1928, 1932, and 1936). Still hot discussions and debates are going on if Dhyan Chand is the first choice among Indian sportsmen who deserves India’s highest civilian honour – Bharat Ratna! Known as “The Wizard” for his superb ball control, Chand played his final international match in 1948. He has scored more than 400 goals during his international career and has played a significant role in placing India’s name in World sports map. He was truly a true sportsman who made India’s national game international.

Dhyan Chand was born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh as the son of hockey player, Roop Singh. Due to frequent transfers of his father, Dhyan terminated his studies after 6 years. Young Chand had no serious inclination towards sports. But he loved wrestling. Chand joined the Indian Army at the age of 16. Between 1922 and 1926, Chand exclusively played army hockey tournaments and regimental games and later selected for Indian army team. After reintroducing field hockey in the Olympics in 1928, the newly formed Indian Hockey Federation made best preparations for sending Indian team. In its first game in the tournament Dhyan Chand was the centre-forward and whole through the series, he was simply the best. India won their Olympics medal in hockey.

Success was repeated in the next two seasons too, thus completing a hat-trick. India won Gold Medals at 1932, and 1936 games too. He retired from international matches in 1948. After retirement, he taught at coaching camps at Mount Abu, Rajasthan. Dhyan Chand died on 3 December 1979 at Delhi.
