Dharmesh Darshan Biography

Dharmesh Darshan is a popular director of Bollywood known for the romantic movies – Raja Hindustani and Dhadkan. Both these movies are always remembered for its romantic music given by Nadeem Shravan also. He shares a unique relationship with Aamir Khan and has worked with him for the movies – Raja Hindustani, and launched his brother Faisal Khan for the movie – Mela in 2000, where Aamir played the leading role opposite Twinkle Khanna. He has also directed Lootere (1993), Aap ki khatir, Haan meine bhi pyar kiya and Bewafaa.

Dharmesh Darshan debut Bollywood with the action movie – Lootere in the year 1993. It starred Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol in the leading roles. It marked the beginning of Milan Luthria, the son of famous director of yesterdays, Raj Khosle in assistant director role and the movie was well received by the audience too. The movie also starred Pooja Bedi and Naseeruddin Shah.  

It took three more years to direct his next movie. It was Raja Hindustani released in the year 1996. This movie is always regarded as one among the best performances of both its leading actors – Aamir Khan and Karishma Kapoor. Both received Filmfare awards for best actors as well. This was the first and last time for which both these active actors shared the same space onscreen. Up to date, this movie is the biggest hit of Dharmesh darshan and it accumulated numerous awards as well. This movie was inspired from an old hit movie – Jab jab phool khile starring Sashi Kapoor and Nanda in the leading roles. Even the ‘Pardesi’ song is indirectly linked to it. However the movie was well received by the public and was the top movie of the year. The controversial kissing scene between the leading actors added to its publicity and still now it’s regarded as one among the most romantic scenes of Bollywood cinema.

Raja Hindustani accumulated seven Filmfare awards including best actor, best actress, best screenplay, best dialogue, best music and best movie. Dharmesh Darshan received best film and best director awards at Star screen awards too. However the next movie with Aamir Khan, Mela (2000) was a big flop at box office. Yet, he came back in a swift with the success of triangular love story – Dhadkan in the same year.  Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty played the leading roles and this movie is regarded as the milestone movie of Shilpa as an actress.

He has also directed Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor and Karishma Kapoor in ‘Bewafa’ which was moderate success at box office. His last released movie, ‘Aap ki khatir’ was a failure at box office.
