Devulapalli Krishnasastri Biography

Devulapalli Krishnasastri, popularly known as Andhra Shelley was a noted Telugu poet, playwright and translator. His literary works include Mahati, Amrutha Veena, Sri Andallu Tiruppavu Kirtanalu, Meghamala, Krishna Paksham and Pravasam. As a lyricist his noted works are En Veedu, Bangaru Papa, Ekaveera, Karthika Deepam, Malleswari, Naa Illu, Gorintaku, Megha Sandesham, Sri Rama Pattabhishekam, Bhagya Rekha, Rakta Kanneeru and Bhakta Tukaram. As a lyricist, his most noted work is Malleeswari. His poetry is grouped under romantic and passionate tag.

 

Krishnasastri was born in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1897. He was brought up in Pitapuram in a family of court-poets. During school days, he was interested in English literature. He started writing poetry at a younger age. He met Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan in 1929. It changed his life and poetic touch. He joined All India Radio in 1945 and wrote numerous plays. He also translated Sri Goda Devi's Tamil Tiruppavai into Telugu Keertanaas. His translation is unique and set to pure carnatic music.

 

Later he came to limelight with his exposure to film music and came to be known as Andhra-Shelly. His all-time Telugu classical hit "Malleeswari" established him a good lyricist. He also assisted Director-Producer DR. B. N. Reddy for this movie. His Telugu lyrics are quite popular. Aakaasa Veedhilo Hayiga Egirevu Desa Desalanni was its top hit song. Among his lyrical works, more than 160 from 70 movies songs became instant hits. He wrote lyrics during the eras of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Ravamma Mahalakhsmi Ravamma of Undamma Bottu Pedata, Adigadigo Gagana Seema Andamaina of Naa Illu, Chesina Papam Needi Chitikina Bratukinkokaridi of Neramu Siksha, Maavi Chigugu Tinagane Koyila of Seetamalakshmi and Aakulo Aakunai Puvvulo Puvvunai of Megha Sandesham are a few noted works.
