Devudu Narasimha Sastri Biography

Devudu Narasimha Sastri was an eminent Kannada writer and Sanskrit scholar. He was also an actor and a journalist by profession. Mimansa Darpana, his commentary on the Indian philosophy of Mimamsa is his most famous work. Sastri also earned fame as a novelist, and Maha Brahmana is his famous work among his novels which received Sahitya Academy Award. Yoga Vasista is yet another notable work published in 7 volumes, and Mayura is a historic novel. Devudu's last novel, Maha Darshana was published after his death in 1962. He was a disciple of Mahamahopadhyaya Vaidhyanatha Shastri.

Devudu Narasimha Sastry was born in 1895. He was one of the prominent writers of Kannada in the first half of 20^th century. He lived during the period 1895–1962, and was married to Gowramma Devudu. The couple has one son, D. N. Gangadhar. A multi-faceted personality he lived a simple life. Apart from authoring numerous novels and non-fiction works, he also worked as a journalist during his life time. He published his first novel, Antaranga, in the year 1932. It is widely regarded as the first novel in Kannada to employ the method of monologue narrative, the extended speech of a single speaker catching the attraction of a reader.

He had interests in diverse fields, and made an ever-lasting impact in every field he worked. His works included Maha Brahamana and Mahakshatriya which were written after an in-depth study of the Upanishads. His major novels are Mahaksatriya, Maha Darshana, Ramayanada Mahapurusharu, Antaranga, Dr. Veena, Mahabharatha, Odeda Mutthu, Karanataka Samskruti, Maha Brahmana, Chinna – Vijayanagara Raja Nartaki, Avala Janma, Bharatada Mahapurusaru, Sampoorana Valmiki Ramayana, Solo-geluvo, Malli and Geddavaru Yaaru? He passed away in 1962.
