Devaraj Biography

Devaraj, popularly referred to as a "Dynamic Hero" is a veteran actor of the Kannada film industry. He has portrayed lead character, supporting character and villainous character in Kannada movies. He has also done a few Telugu and Tamil movies. He has done more than 200 feature films. He won Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal as the protagonist in the film Veerappan in 1991. He is an active theatre artist also and has worked under Shankar Nag and B. Jayashree in the theatric groups, Nag and Spandana respectively.

 

Devaraj’s hometown is Lingarajpuram in North Bangalore. He was born on 20 September 1960. His sole passion was theatre before entering movies and has worked under the guidance of Shankar Nag and B. Jayashree. At first he worked under Jayashree in Spandana and later under Shankar Nag in the theatric group, Nag. It was Shankar Nag who prompted him to join movies and offered him a cameo appearance in his own production venture, Koogu. He worked in HMT watch company for 9 nine years and entered movies through 'Trisula' as a villain. The movie was 27 Mavalli Circle released in 1986. Very soon he got numerous offers as a villain and supporting actor. Indrajith in 1989 where he played supporting role aside Ambarish gave him big break to the industry. He was a branded policeman of Kannada big screen during his early days and has done numerous action movies. He was stereo-casted as a cop during 1990’s.

 

As a hero, his first movie was Aavesha, released in 1990. Lockup Death, Golibaar, Gang Leader and Circle Inspector are his major hits. From 2000, he started appearing in character roles. Deadly Soma, Namma Basava, Maurya, Habba, Pandavaru and Dashamukha are his recent releases. Noted young actor Prajwal Devaraj is his son.
