Deepankar De Biography

Deepankar De is a Bengali film actor who is active in the film industry since early 1970s. He also plays character roles in Bollywood films nowadays. As a talented actor he has showcased his talent as a lead actor, villain and a character artist too, and has worked in both commercial and offbeat movies. In 1986 he got National award for best supporting actor for the Bengali film, Parama, directed by Aparna Sen. He played the role of Shubho Da, interim prime minister in Bollywood film, Youngistaan. Highway, Har Har Byomkesh, Agantuker Pore, Badshahi Angti etc are some of his recent Bengali works.

 

Though he is a Kolkata-based actor, he hails from Jamshedpur of present-day Jharkhand. He was born on 5 July 1944. Currently he lives in Kolkata. He made his film debut through great filmmaker Satyajit Ray's 1971 award winning film – Seemabaddha in a small role and later worked with him for the movie, ‘Jana Aranya' after a long break followed by major roles in Ray’s last trilogy, Ganashatru, Shakha Proshakha and Agantuk. Ray found him as the best suit for grey characters and Deepankar succeeded in portraying such roles too.

 

Deepankar has a keen interest in astrology and once he wrongly predicted that Satyajit Ray is to get a granddaughter, when Ray casually asked about it. Later Ray on the film sets of 'Agantuk' commented that Deepankar’s astrology is rubbish and he is to give one tight slap for that, and started laughing. This renowned film personality currently serves as the Chairman of the Governing Council, Academic Council and other Committees, apart from being the President of SRFTI, a Society constituted by the Government of India. He is in a live-in relationship with Bengali actress Dolon Roy.
