Deepa Dasmunsi Biography

Deepa Dasmunsi is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian and cabinet minister from Bengal, associated with Indian National Congress. She is a former MLA of Bengal too. She is married to senior Congress leader, former parliamentarian and cabinet minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi. Priya suffered a massive stroke and paralysis on 12 October 2008, a few months before the general elections and he went to coma. Deepa has to take over his political mantle, and got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 2009 from Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency. Priya is in coma condition for the past eight years or so.

She was born on 15 July 1960 in Kolkata. Benoy Ghosh and Durga Ghosh are her parents. She got married to prominent political leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi in 1994 and the couple has one son, Priyadeep Dasmunshi. She completed her Master’s in dramatics with a gold medal from Rabindra Bharati University. After her marriage with Priya Ranjan, she has been associated with Bengal state politics. In 2006 she successfully contested in the state assembly elections and got elected from Goalpokhar Vidhan Sabha constituency. She is also a social worker known for her activities for poor children and tribal people.

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was serving his term as a cabinet minister and parliamentarian from Raiganj Lok Sabha Constituency when he suffered a massive stroke and paralysis in 2008. He was unable to speak or recognise anyone. Though he underwent stem cell therapy, he couldn’t recover and went to coma stage. At this point of time, she contested Lok Sabha elections from Raiganj and got elected to parliament. She served as Union Minister of State of Urban Development in Manmohan Singh’s ministry during 28 October 2012 – 16 May 2014.
