Debendranath Tagore Biography

Debendranath Tagore was a Hindu philosopher and religious reformer. He was one of the founding members of Brahmo religion in 1848 and an active member of the Brahmo Samaj which aimed to reform the Hindu religion and way of life. He was born as the son of industrialist Dwarkanath Tagore. But he is better known as the father of Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore has also written a few books in Bengali and English languages.

 

Among his other kids, Dwijendranath Tagore, Satyendranath Tagore, Hemendranath Tagore, Jyotirindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Birendranath Tagore and Swarnakumari Tagore were a few names who have made distinct fingerprints in the cultural map and social life of Bengal. They were famous in different fields including literature, music and knowledge. His other children were Birendranath Tagore, Somendranath Tagore, Soudamini Tagore, Sukumari Tagore, Saratkumari Tagore and Barnakumari Tagore. His spouse’s name is Sarada Devi.

 

Debendranath Tagore was born to the Tagore family in Jorasanko, Bengal on 15 May 1817. The Tagore family is one of the leading families of Bengal with over three hundred years of history and is regarded as a key influence during the Bengal Renaissance. This family has contributed a lot to the nation in the fields of art, religion, literature as well as social service. The family surname is Banerjee. Tagore was a close friend of Ram Mohan Roy. He came into touch with Brahmoism through the Brahmo Sabha, a reformist movement in Hinduism. He was influenced by the Hinduism a lot since childhood. He learned Upanishads and other religious books.

 

In 1839, with tutelage from Pandit Ram Chandra Vidyabageesh he started Tattwabodhini Sabha and in 1843, Debendranath started the Tattwabodhini Patrika. In 1950, he published a book titled Brahmo Dharma with the fundamental principles. His spiritual stature was confirmed by Sri Ramakrishna and he forms a pillar in the Bengal renaissance as well as the reform and rejuvenation of Hindu religion. Bangla Bhashay Sanskrita Vyakaran, Brahmodharmer Mat O Biswas, Atmatattvavidya and Masik Brahmo Samajer Upadesh are among his published Bengali books.
