Debashree Roy Biography

Debashree Roy is a National award winning Bengali actress. She has acted in more than 100 films and has 40 awards in her name. She has acted in a few Tamil movies as well, with name, Chintamani. She won National Film Award for Best Actress for the film Unishe April (Bengali) in 1995. She played the role of a young doctor in this movie. Roy is the maternal aunt of Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee. She was briefly married to Bengali actor Prasenjit Chatterjee, son of Bengali and Bollywood actor, Biswajit. She is a very successful actress of Bengali cinema and has become part of many landmark movies, both commercial and critical. She played the role of Satyavathi in B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharata aired on Doordarshan during late 80’s and early 90’s. Debashree is active in politics too and at present she is Trinamool Congress MLA from Bengal.

Roy started her career as a child artist at the age of 5. She first appeared in a Bengali movie Pagol Thakur, released in the year 1967. Later she appeared in Balok Gadhadhar and Kuheli in child actress roles. She discontinued her studies and concentrated on dance and art forms. She is a trained Odissi dancer and has done numerous stage concerts. Her dancing career was started at a younger age and she learnt it from her mother, sister, Bandana Sen and Kelucharan Mahapatra. Now she owns a dance troupe with name, Nataraj.  

Debashree’s debut movie was Nadi Theke Sagare directed by Arabinda Mukhopdhay. She played female lead opposite Mithun Chakraborty.  Her noted movies include - Unishe April, Dadar Kirti, Kabhi Ajnabi The, Poolwari, Jiyo to Ayese Jio, Mamta Ki Chhao Mein, Justice Choudury and 36 Chowringhee Lane. She has worked with leading directors of Bengali film industry like Mrinal Sen and Rituparno Ghosh. Her recent releases are Antore Bahire, Jibon Rang Berang and Life In Park Street.
