Dayananda Saraswati Biography

Dayananda Saraswati is one of the greatest religious leaders of the cultural map of India. He is well known as the founder of the Arya Samaj, a Hindu reform movement of the Vedic tradition. He was a scholar of Vedas as well as Sanskrit language. He was the first to give the call for Swarajya as "India for Indians" – in 1876. Shyamji Krishna Varma, who founded India House in London was a disciple of Dayananda Saraswati. He advocated the doctrine of Karma and Reincarnation and emphasized the Vedic ideals of brahmacharya and devotion to God. The Theosophical Society and the Arya Samaj were united later to form Theosophical Society of the Arya Samaj. He promoted equal rights for women and her right to education as well as learning ancient sculptures.

 

Dayanand Saraswati was born on 10, February, 1824 in Tankara of Rajkot, Gujarat as the son of Karshanji Lalji Tiwari and Yashodabai. His original name was Mool Shankar. He was born in a rich family and his father was a tax collector and the head of an eminent Brahmin family of the village. He led a comfortable early life, studying Sanskrit and other ancient works preparing to become a religious priest. The deaths of his younger sister and his uncle from cholera made young Dayanand a little phiospphical and he began the quest of life and its real meaning. He spent 25 years wandering in search of truth. He practised yoga and became the disciple of Virajanand Dandeesha during this time.

 

Dayanand Saraswati founded Arya Samaj enunciating the Ten Universal Principles as a code for Universalism Krinvanto Vishwaryam. He found that Hinduism has been corrupted and misled by religious priests. He travelled nationwide and conducted debates with religious people as well. He founded Arya Samaj as a means of reformation of Hinduism. He died on 30 October 1883, aged 59.
