Dayanand Mandrekar Biography

Dayanand Mandrekar is an Indian politician and former MLA of Goa. He belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party. A 4-term MLA of Goa legislative assembly, he was defeated by Vinoda Paliencar of the Goa Forward Party, who later became Fisheries minister. Before that he has been elected from Siolim constituency four times. He lost the seat in 2017. In the previous ministry he served as Minister of Civil Supplies and Price Control, Water Resources, Archives & Archaeology and Art & Culture in the Goa Government. He has also served as a cabinet minister in Manohar Parrikar led BJP government in 2002. He has been disqualified once for holding an office of profit, which is against laws and rules.

 

In his political career, he remained the MLA representing Siolim constituency four consecutive terms since 1999. He got elected for the first time in 1999, followed by 2002, 2007 and 2012. He lost the seat only in 2017. While he was serving as the Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly for the second time, he was disqualified in 2005 for holding an office of profit and the conviction upheld by the Supreme Court of India. However he retained the seat in 2007, and won 2012 elections too.

 

When Bharatiya Janata Party led by Manohar Parrikar formed the government in Goa in 2002, Dayanand Mandrekar was induced to the cabinet for the first time. He was allotted the portfolios of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and Non-Conventional Source of Energy, and he served in the cabinet position during 3 June 2002 - 2 February 2005. When Bharatiya Janata Party formed the government in Goa in 2012, he was induced to the cabinet for the second time.
