Dattatreya Rama Rao Parvatikar Biography

Dattatreya Rama Rao Parvatikar was a Hindu saint, yoga instructor and sanyasi from Karnataka also known as a musician. He played rudra Veena, for which he is known for. He was an exponent of nada yoga who started the Nada Yoga School in Rishikesh in 1950. Dattatreya Parvatikar founded the Shri Raghavendra Mission in Bangalore in 1975. Every year a music concert is being arranged here in his memory. He lived during the period, 1916-1990. He lived in the premises of Badrinath Temple of The Himalayas, and led a spiritual life. He was fondly called ‘Veena Baba’ by his spiritual followers.

 

Dattatreya Rama Rao Parvatikar was born in the year 1916 in Guledgudda of present-day Bagalkot district, Karnataka. He was a great devotee of Raghavendra Swamiji, te great Vaishnava saint of Mantralaya. He was also known by the names Nadayogi, Veena Maharaj etc. Nadayogi Veena Maharaj D.R. Parvatikar was Haridasa and a great Rudra veena player. A patron of music and yoga who lived a spiritual life, he was quite different from other religious saints who lived during his time. He tried to spread spirituality through music, and also started a yoga school, Nada Yoga School in Rishikesh in 1950 which still functions.

 

Nada Yogi Veena Baba also composed a few songs, and a few of them are available in CDs and on net. He was associated with traditional Indian music. Nada Yoga School, registered with Yoga Alliance, USA and Canadian Yoga Alliance, is one of the oldest and traditional yoga schools in Rishikesh. Currently it has a team of 8 best yoga teachers of the town. Nada Yoga is a unique style of teaching established by Nada Yogi.
