Dashrath Patel Biography

Dashrath Patel was an Indian artist, designer and sculptor from Sojitra, Gujarat. He was the founder secretary of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and culture, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1981 and Padma Bhushan in 2011. He has extensively worked from Alibagh, near Mumbai during his last years, and has designed many buildings in Mumbai and Chennai, and other parts of India. He was awarded ‘Grandmaster of Design’ award at the Icograda design week in India in 2007. He passed away in 2010.

 

Dashrath Patel was born in 1927 in Sojitra, Gujarat. He studied in Fine Arts College in Chennai in early 1950s and for advanced studied travelled to Paris. He studied painting, sculpture and ceramics at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris during 1953 – 1955. After studies he started his professional career, and worked mostly in Mumbai. He practiced in diverse art fields. He did painting, ceramics, and also graphical, exhibition and industrial designs. Slowly he turned to be one of the most renowned artists in the post-independent era in India.

 

He collaborated and worked aside Tyeb Mehta, M.F. Hussain and V. S. Gaitonde in Bhulabhai Desai Institute, Mumbai in the 1950s, and has conducted exhibitions with them. It was during his early phase of professional career. Later Patel got drawn towards the art of photography as well. He was the founder secretary of the National Institute of Design, and also remained there for long 20 years since 1961. His path-breaking work in glazes and art ceramics at the School of Art, Prague make him one of the most distinguished artists of this field.
