Dara Singh Biography

Dara Singh was a famous Indian Wrestler who later worked in movies and television serials. As an actor, he is best known for portraying the role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana aired on Doordarshan in the late 1980’s. He has also appeared in many television ads. He started his acting career in the early 1950’s. During 1960’s, he appeared in many B-grade action movies alongside actress Mumtaz, which were hugely successful. He was the first sportsman to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Apart from Hindi movies, he has also directed, produced, scripted and acted in Punjabi movies. His son Vindu Dara Singh is also a film and television actor and the winner of Bigg Boss Season 3. Dara Singh has married twice. In 1996 he was inducted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame. He retired from tournaments in the year 1983.

 

Singh was born on 19 November in 1928 in Dharmuchak village of Amritsar, Punjab. He had height of 6 feet 2 inches and other qualities best suited for a wrestler. Due to his physique, he was encouraged to take up Pehlwani (wrestling) as profession by his well-wishers. He was also frequently invited by kings of princely states for such entertainment programs. He reached Singapore in 1948. He participated in many international wrestling championships and won many trophies. His acting career started in the year 1952 with the movie – Sangdil. He worked as a stuntman in many B Grade movies and he got his first role as a hero in 1962. The movie, King Kong was very popular.

 

He was paired for the first time with Mumtaz in 1963 and then started a new era of stunt movies, the leading pair completely dominating the scene. They together worked in 16 films and were the most paid actors. Dara Singh was paid nearly 4 Lakh Indian rupees per film, which was a huge amount during 1960’s. He founded Dara Film Studio was founded in 1978. His last Hindi movie was Jab We Met. He died on 12 July 2012 aged 83.
