Dadoba Pandurang Biography

Dadoba Pandurang was a social reformer, writer and linguist who lived in Maharashtra during 19th century. He lived during the period, 9 May 1814 – 17 October 1882. His full name is Dadoba Pandurang Tarkhadkar. After he turned a social activist, he gave up his surname ‘Tarkhadkar’. He earned the title Rao Bahadur. He was a brother of Atmaram Pandurang, a social reformer and physician who founded Prarthana Samaj and was one among the two founders of Bombay Natural History Society. Dadoba Pandurang was a fellow of University of Bombay. He published Maharastra Bhasheche Vyakaran in 1836, a book on Marathi grammar.

 

Rao Bahadur Dadoba Pandurang was born in Pune, Maharashtra on 9 May 1814. He completed his primary education from a local school of his village, and he studied high school studies at a private school named Bombay Native School and Book Society, later which he achieved a scholarship to continue his studies at Elphinstone. He also learnt different languages such as Portuguese, Persian and Sanskrit. In 1830 he became a school teacher, and he moved to Surat 10 years later. He continued with his career as a teacher.

 

In 1852 he became Deputy Collector and Magistrate at Ahmednagar. He moved to Thana in 1858 and was forced to retire in 1861 because of tensions with superiors. During his lifetime he gave some significant contributions to Marathi grammar and authored one book, Maharastra Bhasheche Vyakaran which became immensely popular and a bestseller selling several copies. The book was reprinted 7 times during his lifetime.

 

Yashoda Pandurangi, Dharam Vivechan, Paramhamsik Bramhadharma, A Hindu Gentleman's Reflections respecting the works of Swedenborg, The absurdity of the Holi Festival as it is now practised by the Hindus and Vidhavasrumarjan are among his published books. Shishubodh was posthumously published in 1884.
