D. R. Karthikeyan Biography 
D. R. Karthikeyan is an Indian Police Service officer from Tamil Nadu. Special director of the Central Bureau of Investigation and Director General at National Human Rights Commission are the major posts held by him in his professional career. He also gained nationwide media attention after heading the Special Investigation Team that probed the high profile Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Former Prime Minister was killed in a suicidal bomb attack in Sriperumbudur, Chennai on May 21st, 1991. The following day, Chandrasekhar government handed the investigation over to CBI and the agency created a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under D. R. Karthikeyan. SIT probe confirmed the role of LTTE in the assassination.
Karthikeyan was born to an agricultural family in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. Devarayapuram is his native village. He studied Chemistry and Agriculture from the Annamalai University, and worked in the field of agriculture in his ancestral farm for a year. Then he took LLB from Madras Law College, and enrolled at Bar Council of Madras. He passed Civil Services Exams in the early 1960s and joined IPS in 1964. He received police training from National Police Academy in Mount Abu. Since then he has been associated with several high profile cases, and he served in many high order administrative posts as well.
He served as the Director, Central Bureau of Investigation in 1998, and Director General of National Human Rights Commission, Inspector General of Police, Central Reserve Police Force Hyderabad, Head of Karnataka State Police Academy, Deputy Inspector General of Police at Karnataka State Intelligence Department and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Bangalore are the major positions held by him. For his contributions towards Indian Civil Service, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010.
