D. Balakrishna Biography

D. Balakrishna is an Indian musician and exponent of traditional string musical instrument, Veena. Born into a family of rich musical heritage, he is the son of noted veena player Doraiswamy Iyengar. A very talented and senior Veena artist of present generation, he received the honour of "Best Veena Player" by the Madras Music Academy in 1979, 1991, 1996, 2006 and 2008. In 1997 he was honoured with "Ganakalshri" by the Karnataka Gana Kala Parishat and the "Puttachar Memorial Award" by the percussive art centre, Bangalore. He has been most recently awarded with "Karnataka Kalashree" Award by Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy for the year in 2015.

 

D. Balakrishna was born in Mysore, Karnataka in 1955 as the second son of Doraiswamy Iyengar. Born in Mysore, the family shifted to Bangalore during his childhood days, where his father worked with AIR as music producer. Initially he was interested in mridangam, and later he switched over to Veena, following the footsteps of his father.

 

He was introduced to Veena by his grandfather Venkatesha Iyengar. He studied statistics and worked in Reserve Bank of India as a Special Assistant, and carried music along with it. His father always advised him never to take music as full-time profession. Currently he is retired from banking sector, and fully into music. He has performed with his father several times.

 

He made his first public performance in 1975 at the age of 20, and currently he is Asthana Vidwan of the Kanchi Kamakoti Samstanam. He is a top grade artiste of All India Radio. In 2007 he released an album collaborated with a few more artists, and it was titled - Veena Wonders Volume 1. He is the current torch bearer of the Mysore style of Veena.
